Out of Town

It is undeniably the case that the vast  majority of documents within our archive  relate directly to Neath.  However, due to  land acquisition, marriages and inheritances  and for a variety of other reasons (including  donations and bequests from deceased local  historians and members) information to  areas outside the immediate district will be  found in the NAS collections housed at the  Neath Mechanics’ Institute.

So it was that Andrew Dulley of the WGAS was able to assist Mr Robert Hastie in discovering the past relating to an area of South Gower where he resides.

Hareslade has existed since ancient times and documents relating to this are preserved in the NAS archive among the Bach-y-Gwreiddyn (small root) Estate Papers of the Matthew family of Middle Hill, Bishopston.  Mr Hastie was delighted to view relevant documents from 1472, 1530 and 1570.

In his previous capacity as Lord-Lieutenant for West Glamorgan, Mr Hastie was a strong supporter of locating the WGAS archive access point combined with the NAS archive at the Neath Mechanics’ Institute.  The Society is pleased that we were able to assist him in his research.

Who knows what information the NAS archive may hold of YOUR family or of YOUR property - why not come along and find out?
